For most people this is the classic Saab that established the company's reputation for making a solid, dependable and safe. Launched in 1979, the most exciting model was the Turbo, which developed a hefty 145bhp. Better though, in 1984, was the Turbo 16 hatchback and saloon, with twin overhead camshafts and intercooler producing 175bhp. The Turbo 16S had side skirts, spoked alloys, leather and stiffer suspension. What to look for: Look out for lots of smoke when flooring the throttle to see if the turbo is blown. Suspension works hard with that heavy body, so bushes and shocks can be worn.Saab 900s for sale on Auto TraderOn Bing: more pictures of this car

This would be very sad for everyone who works there but also for the rest of us. Saabs have a bad press. Or more accurately a lazy one. Obviously a purist pines for the quirky old days before General Motors bought them, but actually the saloons and estates built in the last decade was not that bad. From the 99 to 900, 9000, and the later 9-5 models, all Saabs make sensational second-hand buys. In terms of value for money Saabs have never failed to deliver, offering huge levels of standard equipment, arguably the most comfortable seats ever fitted to a vehicle and an exemplary safety record.Only the increasing electrickery of the 9-3 seems to have caused rather a lot of them to need the firm grasp of the dealer's reset tool.Indeed, the key to stress free Saab ownership is finding a capable garage, or a specialist who will charge a reasonable labour rate and is happy to source certain parts from breakers.topTop 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)Top 10 best used Saabs - 1(©Saab)1. Saab 9-3The Saab 9-3 is off to a good start because it looks so good, with a finely sculptured body. Dynamically there is a range of increasingly powerful petrol and turbo engines, which make progress quite rapid, and the Saab's suspension can easily cope. Refinement, low noise and the minimum of vibration add to the already high comfort levels. What to look for: It's the engine's electronic brain that seems to cause the most problems, suffering from error messages and minor malfunctions. Plus there have been irritating faults with the electric windows and various rattles and creaks. There have also been reports of gearbox problems and clutches that fail early.Saab 9-3s for sale on Auto TraderOn Bing: more pictures of this cartop1. Saab 9-3 - 2(©Saab)1. Saab 9-3 - 2(©Saab)1. The Saab 9-5 is great at soaking up bumps and keeping occupants happy in the spacious interior. The seats are very comfortable whilst the driver's environment with easy to reach controls and clear dials are a delight. Generous standard equipment and impressive safety features and success in crash tests make the 9-5 even more attractive. The downside is that its high power upsets the balance of the car. What to look for: Electrics are always a problem including the trip computer, which can cost a fortune to sort out. Automatic gearboxes can go at higher mileages along with timing chains and steering racks.Saab 9-5s for sale on Auto TraderOn Bing: more pictures of this cartop2. The turbo does lag a bit and in 0-to-60mph terms it is no faster than the average hatch. However, in the mid range 50-70mph it takes just 6 seconds and top speed is over 140mph. Also the fact that this Saab just looks like any other slightly dull Swedish car is a major attraction, plus the kitchen sink specification and ultra-low prices. What to look for: Alternators and batteries have a lot to deal with. Easily covers 100,000 plus mileages, brakes and suspension the main areas of concern.Saab 9000 Carlssons for sale on Auto TraderOn Bing: more pictures of this cartop3. Saab 9000 Carlsson - 4(©Saab)3. It is however very pleasant to drive with a decent ride, solid build and executive-expense-account running costs. What to look for: They always need replacement brakes and exhaust, early '90s automatics can self-destruct and that turbo really does need a history. If the climate control doesn't work, disconnect it and fry, or find someone who really knows what they are doing and swallow a big bill.Saab 9000s for sale on Auto TraderOn Bing: more pictures of this cartop4. Saab 99 TurboIn 1977 it wasn't just punk that shook the world. When the Saab 99 Turbo's small turbo spun into action you knew all about it as you wrestled with the wheel. Saloons and hatches were available, but two- and three-doors look the coolest - in black, of course. What to look for: The engines are not exactly unburstable and few are still spinning on their original turbo. Build quality, devoted owners and those who understand the demands of driving this grenade on the limit are the only reasons why there are any survivors. This is a very old car now and the most expensive thing to fix is rampant rust. Look around the sills, doors and the wheel arches. On Bing: more pictures of this cartop5. Saab 99 Turbo - 6(©Saab)5. Saab 900 ConvertibleIf you want a convertible that looks just like a big, giant shoe, then the original 900 drop-top will definitely suit you. It has all of the qualities of the saloon, which includes a structure that is far stiffer than plenty of contemporary tin tops. So it's the most solid and easily the coolest 80s convertible, and in Turbo form it is one of the most rapid. What to look for: The engines go on forever with their chain drives, but the ancillaries like alternators, fuel pumps and coil packs can fail once the miles build up. Rust is now an issue so look carefully as the wings, sills and floor.Saab 900 Convertibles for sale on Auto TraderOn Bing: more pictures of this cartop7. Saab 900 Convertible - 8(©Saab)7. Saab 900/9-3 hatchback/convertibleIt's not nearly as good as the original 900 and everyone makes fun of the fact that underneath there is an awful lot of Vauxhall Cavalier. In hatchback format it is fine, but once the roof goes missing so does the handling. It is flimsy, so best for posing in rather than pushing hard. On the upside you get lots of standard kit and it's sensational value used as they can now be picked up for buttons. What to look for: Front suspension arms wear out, check for engine oil and coolant leaks. Will take high mileages, but ignition coils can go without warning, but is easy to fit.Saab 9-3s for sale on Auto TraderOn Bing: more pictures of this cartop8. Saab 9-3XYes it's a 9-3 estate, but it rides slightly higher in the air and not only that it has plastic wheel arches too. Golly. That has not impressed buyers that much which has meant a fairly sudden drop in value - great news for those after a prestige 4x4 without the 'x4' so it is relatively cheap to own and the TD will officially do 55mpg. What's not to like? What to look for: It is very early days for the X, but really any issues are going to be as the standard 9-3, so will be electrical anything from engine management to the computer.Saab 9-3Xs for sale on Auto TraderOn Bing: more pictures of this cartop9. New Saab 9-5The new 9-5 is far better than anyone expected and is different enough from the Germans for those who want to stand out. Like the previous 9-5 it is absolutely huge inside. It's safe as houses of course and will cost far less to run, with 53.3mpg from the diesel. And when you buy used you will save a packet on depreciation. What to look for: Currently under warranty and there have been no recalls so far, so it's too early to get a pattern on any problem. Best though to get a proper electronic diagnosis/troubleshoot before buying.Saab 9-5s for sale on Auto TraderOn Bing: more pictures of this cartop10. New Saab 9-5 - 11(©Saab)10.
